Medium wasn't always filled with people who are only looking to make money though. Back in the day before the partner program, people actually wrote quality content.

I suggest reading Attila Vágó's article about being on medium for 8 years. Apparently medium used to have quality content which I suspect made it not feel like a waste of time.
